Making the Time to Reconnect…

You know how we all get to holidays or that once-in-a-century family reunion and we all say; ‘We should get together more often!’ and then we don’t? Well, that’s really unfortunate and happens so often. What if we actually followed through and lived by our word when we said we were going to get together?

What’s been tougher is that even after all these years so much has happened. At what point do you just stop with the excuses and just make it a priority? Unfortunately now, there’s a lot that I wish I would have talked to my Grandma Penny about. There’s quite a lot now going through old pictures and things of Grandma Wards’ that my Mom wishes she would’ve just made the time to sit down and go through things. So many stories we thought we would remember because we heard it so often and now the details escape us.

So Mom and I decided to tackle some of this stuff now instead of waiting until it’s too late again. It’s turned into a neat mommy-daughter project. Mom has a couple boxes of pictures going back 3 to 4 generations from her mom and we reached out to my Grandpa’s sisters for help. Today was just so sweet. They recalled family and moments that only they know and have shared, and stories about growing up, their bother and parents and grandparents. I got to share some incredible time, with some incredible women, and take a front seat just watching memories and ancestry unfold.

Please don’t wait any longer, my friend. Please make that call and reach out to them. You’ve been putting it off. Maybe because you’ve just been trying to get by. Maybe because it’s painful or uncomfortable making the first move. But please don’t procrastinate on something you’ll never be able to go back and redo. Make the call and set the date and then follow through. Be intentional. We all know we aren’t promised tomorrow but the work days sweep away into the months and summer and the time slips through our fingers before we know it.

There’s conversations I wish I would have made the time for. There’s phone calls and dinners that I thank God happened because there’s folks I can’t call now. There’s pictures I’m so glad we took that second to get the phone out and snap a picture together. I wish we had more videos. I wish we had been more intentional. I make a list of people I really wanted to make sure I saw and made time for this year and then I reached out to them and started scheduling. Do what you can with what you have today. You’ll be grateful that you did.

We’re pretty cute!

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. ~James 4:13-17
